ETN-OMT Summer School “School on Electronics for Sensing of mechanical motion”

Between 26th and 29th of June 2018, the University of Vienna and the University of Hamburg are organizing a 4-day summer school on on 'Electronics of Sensing of mechanical motion' held in Vienna within the ETN-OMT Marie-Curie network.

This joined workshop of Vienna University and Hamburg University is a hands-on workshop. Due to limited space it is thus (unfortunately) restricted to early stage researchers who are financed by OMT.

In this 4 day workshop you will learn the working principle behind electronic circuits for photo detection in optomechanical experiments. Compared to off-the-shelf detectors, building your own readout electronics will give you the required flexibility and confidence that each detector is designed for optimal performance, without compromises to cover a broad range of applications.

Starting at the conversion of photons to electrons, we will introduce the fundamental building blocks and design aspects of photo detectors, ending at the acquisition of measurement data with a computer system. On the way, we will discuss the basic working principle of operational amplifiers and their use in analog conversion and filtering circuits. You will learn about limitations of real devices, their noise behavior and the influence of proper power supply filtering on the performance of low-noise detection circuits. We will look at ways to simulate the time and frequency behavior of operational amplifier circuits, giving you the prerequisites to choose the correct components for your measurement tasks. You will learn how a circuit idea can be converted into an actual circuit board design using KiCad, one of the most widely used open-source programs for circuit layouting. In a hands-on tutorial, you can then lay your hands onto some actual circuit boards and try soldering of surface mount devices for yourself.

At the end of the workshop, you will have acquired the knowledge and tools to be able to build your own photo detectors, specifically tailored to the needs of your experiment at the quantum-noise level and beyond.

Travel Information

Arrival at the airport

By Train: The CAT (~22€, 16min) and the Railway System S7 (~4€, 25min) will take you directly into the city of Vienna. They terminate at the city air terminal within the "Wien-Mitte" railway station. In order to reach our institute you can either take a taxi, or you take the underground line U3 (direction "Ottakring") until the station "Volkstheater" and change onto the line U2 (direction "Stadion"). Get off at the station "Schottentor-Universität". From there take a tram (lines 37, 38, 40, 41 or 42), to the station "Währingerstraße/Spitalgasse" (2 stops). Walk along Währingerstrasse (back in the direction from which the tram has come.) and turn left into Strudlhofgasse. The entrance to the institute is at Strudlhofgasse 4, on the right-hand side of the street.

By taxi: You can find a taxi stand directly in front of the arrival hall of the airport. It takes you about 30 minutes to get to the institute, the costs are about € 30.- to € 35.-

Arrival at the railwaystation Westbahnhof

By taxi: Journey time approx. 10 minutes.

By tram: From Westbahnhof take the tram number 5 (direction Praterstern) and get out at the station "Währingerstrasse/Spitalgasse". Walk along Währingerstrasse and take the first street to the left (Strudlhofgasse). The entrance to the institute is at Strudlhofgasse 4.

Arrival at the railway station Hauptbahnhof

By taxi: Journey time approx. 20 minutes

By tram: take the tramway line D, which stops across the street, if you leave the railway-building. From there it takes you about 30 minutes until you arrive at the station "Schottentor-Universität". Take a tram (lines 37, 38, 40, 41 or 42), to the station Währingerstraße/Spitalgasse" (two stops). Walk along Währingerstrasse (back in the direction from which the tram has come.)and turn left into Strudlhofgasse. The entrance to the Institute is at Strudlhofgasse 4, on the right-hand side of the street.
