Markus Aspelmeyer receives the 2026 FWF Wittgenstein Award
The quantum physicist receives Austria's highest science award for his research.
Our group conducts research on the interface between quantum physics and gravity at the ÖAW institute IQOQI Vienna and the University of Vienna. The driving force behind our research is the question “Can space-time be prepared in a quantum superposition?”, and its implications for the foundations of physics. We develop quantum measurement and control techniques for quantum states of massive solid state objects, as well as precision sensing techniques to measure gravitational fields at the smallest possible scales of mass and distance. Our ambition is to provide new insights on macroscopic quantum physics, on gravity at small scales and, in the long run, on quantum sources of gravity.

We demonstrate readout of a superconducting microsphere levitated in a superconducting magnetic trap using optical laser light. The position signal is…
We show experimentally that the nonequilibrium character of a memory state enables information erasure below Landauer's bound.
